“A powerful global conversation has begun. Through the Internet, people are discovering and inventing new ways to share relevant knowledge with blinding speed. As a direct result, markets are getting smarter—and getting smarter faster than most companies.”
The Cluetrain Manifesto, 1999
Marketing In The Digital Age was established to help business owners make sense of the many opportunities and threats posed by increasing accessibility of the Internet in South Africa.
Online marketing can be a uniquely cost-effective and quick way to promote a product or service to thousands of people. But if they are disappointed with a product or service, those people can just as quickly damage a business or a reputation.
At the beginning of 2011, Facebook is the second most popular website in South Africa, with Twitter at position 7 and LinkedIn at position 11.
Facebook has almost 600 million members, and over 3 million of those are in South Africa. Twitter currently reaches over a million South Africans.
It is vital to have an understanding of how digital marketing works, and the Digital Marketing faculty plans to introduce a number of training courses to help business owners implement simple, practical solutions for promoting their businesses and managing their reputations online.
